Drug Use:

Proverbs 31:4-7
– Drugs, alcohol, and specifically, marijuana, can lead to poor decision making.
– These substances can damage our memories and lesson our senses.
– However, alcohol was encouraged for those “who are perishing” or “are in anguish”.

Example:  Most Christians would not have a problem with someone being given morphine while they were dying, or an epidural while a woman is giving birth. If one were to say that all drugs are bad, they would have to include aspirin, epidurals, birth control pills, etc…

I Timothy 5:23
– Timothy was encouraged to use a “little wine” for his stomach ailment.
– Drug use is not biblically wrong.
– But like almost anything, drugs can be abused.
– Therefore, the biblical issue with drugs is not their use, but their abuse.

Drug Abuse:

Ephesians 5:17-20
– “The spirits” are not to replace “The Spirit”.
– Drunkenness, or being high, leads to debauchery. The Spirit leads to the type of lifestyle that God is pleased with! (II Timothy 1:7)
– If you’re filled with the Spirit, there is no room for anything else.
– Drugs should not replace the place that God has in our lives. (Philippians 4:6-7, I Thessalonians 5:16-19)
– We should depend on God for all emotional and spiritual struggles. (Psalm 62:5-8)

Romans 5:3-5
– Hardship gives us the opportunity to persevere, and perseverance builds character.
– Drugs must not be used to “escape” hardship.
– Using drugs in this way will only result in a lack of character.

I Corinthians 6:12, 19-20
– It is wrong to bring harm to your body unnecessarily.
– Most drugs have been proven to have very harmful side effects.
– We must try to take care of our bodies, as they house the Holy Spirit.
– Not everything is a right or wrong issue, but sometimes a “good, better or best” issue.
– We must strive to live exemplary lives that do not hinder the integrity of the gospel! (I Timothy 4:16)

– Drug use is not biblically wrong; drug abuse is.
– We must rely on God and not on drugs or other vices. DRUGS SHOULD NEVER BE USED RECREATIONALLY.
– Drugs have many harmful side effects: mentally, spiritually and physically.
– We must be cautious in using any substance so as to not taint the gospel for anyone.
